Ao Yun, Shangri-la 2014 Overview

The vineyards of Ao Yun are located in Adong, Shuori, Sinong and Xidang, just below the sacred Meili Mountain at altitudes varying from 2,200 to 2,600 metres, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon to give its finest expression of a unique terroir. Due to the altitude, the climate is hotter and drier than the vineyards at ground level, with only 250mm of rain falling during the summer months - by comparison Bordeaux experiences 750mm. The days of intense sunshine and UV exposure combined with cool nights provides good photosynthesis, great concentration, thick skins, small berries and deeply coloured wines. The grapes are farmed organically due to a lack of mildew or botrytits, hence no need for chemicals to be sprayed.

This wine is the second of its kind and is therefore unsurprisingly incredibly exclusive: just 2,000 cases have been produced and due to the remote area of vineyard, there is little room for expansion. Only 500 bottles have been released in the UK.

Warmer than average temperatures in 2014 led to an early harvest in the northwest corner of China’s Yunnan province, and grapes developed an excellent concentration and maturity. Winemakers found a balance between freshness and complexity in their second vintage, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: Adong, Shuori, Sinong, Xidang
Grape Varieties: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc
Drink: 2020-2035

Tasting Note: Scents of red fruit, leather, mint, cedar, cinnamon and liquorice develop on the nose – truly complex. The complementary fruit and mineral flavours in this blend are reminiscent of wild raspberries, peony, seaweed and graphite. Dry and medium-to-full-bodied, it reveals a polished tannic structure.

Ao Yun 2014 is displayed in a magnificent branded wooden box (as shown in the bottom left picture).

Expert Reviews
Edward Ragg
“The 2014 Ao Yun is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. With its deep ruby appearance, the 2014 Ao Yun shows dark, brooding cassis and leafy bramble fruit overlaid by marked toasted new oak and a touch of development, now at around five years of evolution in a vintage that looks as though it will evolve more readily than the more robust 2015 and 2016 wines. That said, on the palate, the 2014 is still relatively youthful with a ripe core of dark fruit, distinct new-oak notes of clove, smoke, vanilla and toast, ripe chewy tannins and some uplifting acidity. This seems more savory in style overall than either the 2015 or 2016 vintages and a step up in quality from the inaugural 2013 Ao Yun. Still needs time, if approachable now.”
