Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir Knox Alexander Santa Maria Valley 2019 Overview

-
Au Bon Climat translates as “a well-exposed vineyard” a name suiting the coastal position of the vineyards, with its benevolent Pacific fog and cooling breeze. Making the most of these conditions Au Bon Climat buy clones from Burgundy. This contributes to creating wines which emulate the restraint and finesse of Burgundy and France with a magic touch of New World flair.

Named after Jim Clendenen’s son Knox, this wine is from the finest lots of Pinot Noir from the estate Le Bon Climat and Bien Nacido Vineyard since 1999. These two vineyards, separated only by the Sisquoc River, have slow growing vines planted in well drained poor soils, which produce really distinctive Pinot Noir. Both vineyards struggle to yield much most years, but the small amount that is harvested is of amazing quality.

Vineyards: Knox is a blend of our two “estate” vineyards, Bien Nacido and Le Bon Climat. Both vineyards are in the Santa Maria Valley, with Le Bon Climat being located on the southern edge of this appellation. Le Bon Climat was planted in 1998 with low vigor rootstock in some well drained poor soil. This combination of low vigor plants and poor soil limit the crop size and slow ripening.

The grapes from both Bien Nacido and Le Bon Climat were harvested in the early morning and vineyard sorted. Once destemmed, the must was fermented in open top 5 ton fermenters and punched down twice daily to extract all the “good stuff” from the grapes. After fermentation finished, the must was pressed and pumped into 100% new François Frères french oak barrels. The wine was kept in these barrels for 22 months, except for a gentle racking after one year. The best lots were blended then bottled without filtration. The clarity and color of this wine are beautiful.

Weather in 2019 Spring saw heavy rains which raised the twin threats of mildew and coulure, however, a long summer was poised for the rescue delivering a succession of warm, sunny days with little in the way of heat spikes. The morning fog also helped serve as a useful cooling aid helping to preserve the essential acidities and aromatic flavors of the grapes. The long growing season allowed for an unhurried harvest. Fortunately, the harvest was mostly in when, on October 23, massive wildfires broke out in Sonoma County, which did damage some of the later-ripening grapes. The fires were some of the most extreme in Californian history and a few wineries were sadly either damaged or destroyed. The majority of the harvest was brought in before smoke taint posed any kind of serious threat and early reports are extremely positive. Pinot Noir appears to be particularly successful with good fruit concentration, strong acidity, and depth.

“The 2019 Pinot Noir Knox Alexander is ethereal, delicate and flat-out delicious. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry fruit, game, iron, licorice, dried herbs and orange peel add an exotic flair. This aromatic, mid-weight Pinot is all class. The Knox Alexander is a blend of best barrels from three estate vineyards - Bien Nacido, Le Bon Climat and Rancho La Cuna. ”

“Bright raspberries, sour cherries, exotic flowers, baking spices, forest floor, and leather notes all define the 2019 Pinot Noir Knox Alexander, a medium-bodied, lightly textured, elegant, complex Pinot Noir that's going to keep for a decade if well stored.”
