Bodega Numanthia | Numanthia 2016
-
On the banks of the Duero River, deep within the Spanish province of Zamora, stretches the Toro wine region at the heart of which lies Bodega Numanthia. Bodega Numanthia is the renowned guardian of a unique Spanish winemaking heritage. The Estate’s Tinta de Toro vines, among the world’s oldest, range from 30 to 200 years old. Sculpted by time, these pre-phylloxera vineyards of ungrafted vines have miraculously survived decades of climatic extremes, enduring harsh winters and blistering summers. They yield wines of extraordinary depth and complexity.
A bold and expressive organic Spanish wine made with 100% tinta de toro grapes. Numanthia is the Estate’s signature, renowned as the reference for the Toro designation. Grown on vines between 50 and 100 years old, and harvested by hand at optimal ripeness levels, the tempranillo grapes – known by their local name tinta de toro – are macerated, fermented and then aged for 18 months and matured in 225- and 600-liter French oak barrels, 60% of them new.
Weather 2016 is characterized by a late bud burst along with a rainy spring. Throughout the summer there were several rainfalls that cooled down the temperatures and improved ripening. The harvest started a few days later than usual with perfect sanitary conditions. Harvested exclusively by hand with rigorous cluster selection taking into account the perfect shape and the optimal ripeness of the grapes. Harvested between the 25th of September and the 10th of October.
