C de Sec du Chateau Closiot 2023
-
Château Closiot covers eight hectares, making it one of the smallest in Barsac (for comparison, Climens has 30 and Coutet 18 hectares). The vines sit on the Clos Bonneau, an exceptional terroir where red earth dotted with pebbles rests on the Barsac plateau’s typical limestone base. Notably, the soils are relatively cool, imbuing winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens’ wines with mineral steel and freshness to offset the late-picked fruit. Surrounded by Climens, Doisy-Védrines and Coutet, the clos is planted almost exclusively to Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc. It includes a generous four-hectare parcel of 100-year-old vines.
In the Barsac region, neighboring prestigious 1st Growth Classed estates like Climens and Coutet, Château Closiot stands as an exceptional sweet wine producer, showing equal promise for its dry counterparts. Jean-Marie Guffens, with a hint of playful wit, has simply named his cuvée "C," a nod to the iconic Yquem, Suduiraut, and Rieussec.
Vinification: Hand harvested. Traditional vinification. Aged in barrels, 25% of which are new.
Weather in 2023: The grapes harvested proved to be rich, high in sugar, pure and, most importantly, balanced by a fine level of acidity, higher than in 2022. Overall, producers were impressed by the very high quality of the Sauternes and Barsac wines, offering both character and richness, plenty of sapidity and energy, but above all great freshness.
The estate didn't make a sweet wine in 2023 because there wasn't enough botrytis. The vineyard was picked in three different "tris" over a three week period. The resulting wine is texturally rich and dry. The bottle has a screw cap.
Technical Information:
Region: Bordeaux, Barsac
Grape Varieties: 100% Sémillon
Winemaker: Jean-Marie Guffens
Alcohol: 13.5%
Drink: Now to 2030
Tasting Note: Aromas of ripe orchard fruits, baked pear, vanilla pod, white fruits, lemon and spices. It is medium to full-bodied, with a textural and layered palate that includes a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids and a deep, concentrated mid-palate, concluding with a long, chalky and tense finish. - Tasted by Yohan Castaing
