Chateau Galoupet Cru Classe Rose 2021

-
Château Galoupet has a rich history dating back over 200 years. Situated in Provence’s oldest region, it was awarded the status of Cru Classé Cotes de Provence in 1955, and was one of just 18 estates to receive the honour. Having exchanged hands 15 times in the past two centuries, it was most recently refounded by Jessica Julmy in 2019. She held a vision for Château Galoupet: one of elegant, terroir-expressive wines, as well as its transformation into a blueprint for sustainable winemaking. Only grapes grown on the estate are used in winemaking. 69 hectares are under vine, while 77 hectares are set aside for wild protected woodland; environmentalism is a key focus for Château Galoupet Since 2019, full focus has been placed on regenerative work, improving the soils, vines and biodiversity of the estate. All vines have been in organic conversion since August 2020.

Vinification and ageing: Since 2021, the use of a new press protects the grapes from oxidation beautifully and a gentle pressing preserves the aromatic purity of the pulp. The wines are vinified and aged in a state-of-the-art barrel cellar, allowing for temperature control during fermentation and thus, an optimal expression of the terroir. The final blend took place on January 25th.

Tamlyn Currin
“The 2021 Château Galoupet is thrilling. It shows no signs whatsoever of flagging or fading – in fact, of all the vintages, this is the one that is just arriving at its acme in terms of drinking age. It fills the frame, commanding every corner and corridor. Honey, shell-like minerality and wonderful tension. It’s on a cusp of change and there is something thrillingly capricious about what’s in the glass right now. The vivid citrus notes are in retreat, although the fragrance and sweet intensity of ruby grapefruit still tingles in every sip. There is richness slipping through liminal spaces, trailing caramel, butterscotch, tobacco and cream. The faint green of angelica and sandalwood, left by the oak, along with its satin drawl and tug. And then flowers, tinkering with the finish, giving it a sylvan dryad lingering.”

“Pale Provençal pink. Quite a big wine. Arguably less refreshing than some of its peers. But perhaps with age it will assume relative greatness? Very definitely a wine for food, this has depth and potential. Some persistence and it lasted well in an open bottle over 24 hours.”
