Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2020 Overview

Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay was one of the first five wine makers to venture into Marlborough. At the time, it was almost an unimaginable place to set-up a vineyard. But Cloudy Bay’s founder - David Hohnen - was convinced of its potential to produce great wine and invested in the best land of the region. Since then, Marlborough has risen to become New Zealand’s leading wine region, as well as one of the finest winemaking locations in the world. The winery was named after Cloudy Bay, a body of water explorer Captain James Cook came across during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. His discovery coincided with flooding in the region, which washed large amounts of sediment into the sea. Noticing the water’s opaque appearance, Cook cleverly christened the area Cloudy Bay.Today, Cloudy Bay not only captures the essence of Marlborough but also embodies New Zealand's luxury to the world. The luxury of space and time, of intimate moments and nature’s rarest qualities.

Vineyards & Terroir: Vineyards planted in the stony soils of Wairau Valley and the dense clay of the Southern Valleys work together to create a wine that marries ripe stone fruit and citrusy elegance. Key vineyards include Barracks, Motukawa, Estate, Mustang, and Brook Street.

Vinification: The grapes are hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, a traditional approach to keeping the wine fresh and crisp. The resulting juice goes into barrels for fermentation, along with wild yeasts that build complexity and texture. The wine ages for 11 months, with malolactic fermentation used selectively to provide balance.

Weather: In 2020, the whites are mellow and harmonious. The season started off wet, providing the soils and water sources with the reserves needed to cope with the summer season, which was dry and warm. In March 2020, the key harvest month, dry days and cool nights slowed the run to harvest and helped maintain acidity levels. There was little weather pressure – no rain, no cyclones – and producers could take their time to pick. Twenty-twenty will be remembered as the COVID harvest. A nationwide lockdown was enforced mid-harvest (25 March), but the wine industry was deemed an essential business allowing producers to pick their crops and make wines but with strict protocols in place

Tasting Note: The nose is immediately open and appealing, with notes of white peach, apricot, ripe citrus and warm hay. A squeeze of ripe lemon freshens an intense palate of yellow stone fruit framed by mouthwatering saline acidity. Gentle notes of toast provide a savoury backbone to the luscious fruit, providing moreish balance.
