Domaine Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016

-
The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Location: Gevrey Chambertin is the most northern of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits, widely regarded as one of the greatest terroirs for Pinot Noir in the world, thanks to its calcareous clay soils excellent drainage and broad east-facing slope that delivers power and longevity. Totalling a little over 400 hectares, with 26 Premiers Crus and 80 hectares of vineyard across 9 Grand Cru.

Vineyard: The Chambertin vineyard is situated on the east facing slope between Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru. At around 300 metres altitude with a predominantly east to south-east exposure, it sits on limestone and marl soils that favour elegance over sheer power. Often considered one of the more refined and supple Chambertin Grands Crus, Chapelle-Chambertin produces Pinot Noirs noted for their aromatic finesse, floral lift, and silky texture.

Vinification and Maturation: Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by the CADUS cooperage during 18 months.

Weather in 2016: After a complicated start to the growing season, a dry summer with some much needed rainfall in September meant grapes were harvested at a good level of ripeness from 27 September.

Technical Information:
Region: Côte de Nuits
Vineyards: Chapelle-Chambertin
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Drink: Now to 2035+

Tasting Note: The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, a melange of red and black fruit, truffle and smoke gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, quite tensile and focused but very precise and fanning out with confidence on the tender finish. As good, if not better than, the 2015 Chapelle-Chambertin from Jadot.- Tasted by Neal Martin

“(13.2% natural alcohol; 35 hectoliters per hectare produced; this vineyard includes the estate's oldest vines): Bright medium red. Lovely rose petal lift to the vibrant aromas of red cherry, pomegranate, menthol and licorice. Wonderfully rich and sharply delineated; a level above the foregoing wines in creaminess and depth but with pungent minerality giving it a distinctly primary quality and great snap. Classic, youthfully imploded grand cru with a tightly coiled whiplash of a finish and no hard tannins to interfere with the extremely persistent flavors of flowers, mace and minerals. A beauty in the making--and likely to be long-lived.”

“Cask sample. Lightish crimson. Fragrant with sweet red cherry, charming and seductive. Relatively slight on the palate. The tannins are super-fine and the freshness is there but the density is less than I might have expected in the middle. (JH)
