The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Location: Meursault lies in the centre of the Côte de Beaune, between Volnay and Pommard to the north and Puligny-Montrachet to the south, with Auxey-Duresses rising on the western slopes. It is best known for its powerful yet refined Chardonnays, forming a stylistic bridge between the precision of Puligny-Montrachet and the generosity of its northern neighbours.

Vineyard: Meursault’s three benchmark Premier Crus occupy subtly different positions on the Côte d’Or slope: Perrières lies higher and steeper on the hillside (250–300 m), with very stony soils and mixed east to south-east aspects, giving taut, mineral wines of great tension and longevity. Genevrières sits slightly lower at mid-slope (around 250–275 m), largely south to south-east facing, combining excellent sun exposure with structure and depth. Charmes, positioned lower again on gentler mid- to lower-slope sites (230–260 m) and mostly east to south-east facing, benefits from warmer conditions that produce broader, richer, and more immediately expressive wines.

Vinification & Maturation: Grapes are harvested by hand in small boxes and pressed softly, they ferment in oak barrels produced by the CADUS cooperage. 1/3 are new barrels. Aging usually lasts 15 months on fine lies before bottling.

Weather: The 2016 vintage experienced a mild winter, followed by a cooler than average March, and a tempestuous spring. April saw severe frosts, particularly in high altitude vineyards, and a severe outbreak of mildew, leading to heavy spraying and risk to accreditation. The wet weather continued until June, with dry, sunny weather in August. Producers performed two harvests, one for grapes that survived the frosts and another for vines that had produced a second crop. The second harvest was not necessary, but some producers found it useful to bolster the initial crop. The harvest was small, but the grapes that survived were generally of high quality. Burgundy 2016 is considered a classic vintage, renowned for its balance and poise.

Tasting Note: Bright lemon-yellow. Less fruity and floral on the nose than the Genevrières, hinting at almond and spicy oak. Then concentrated and harmonious in the mouth, showing a ripe pineapple flavor and a seductive balance of sweetness and acidity. The salty, palate-saturating finish boasts sneaky length and lift.- Tasting note by Stephen Tanzer

“(2016 was the first year the Jadot team farmed this plot; the yield was full in 2016, as in Narvaux and other high sites in the village, noted Barnier; two of the five barrels were new): Bright lemon-yellow. Less fruity and floral on the nose than the Genevrières, hinting at almond and spicy oak. Then concentrated and harmonious in the mouth, showing a ripe pineapple flavor and a seductive balance of sweetness and acidity. The salty, palate-saturating finish boasts sneaky length and lift. This wine comes across as a bit riper than the Charmes, and will rely as much on its mineral underpinning as on its acidity for longevity. Barnier told me that the Jadot team will force the vines' roots deeper over the next several years in search of greater minerality.”

“The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières is the first vintage that is domaine, as Jadot now owns the vineyard instead of buying in the fruit. It has a straightforward bouquet with lime flower, smoke and walnut coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with good acidity, quite rich in style although I am seeking more stoniness, more mineralité to come through on the finish and define it as a Perrières. This is one where I feel it might have been better to pick a day or two earlier.”
