The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.
Location: Volnay lies roughly in the centre of the Côte de Beaune, bordered by Pommard to the Northeast, Monthélie to the West and Meursault to the South. The south-easterly exposed vineyards produce only red wines and 29 Premiers Crus, considered mid-slope at altitudes between 230 to 280 meters.
Clos des Chenes is one of Volnay's most notable premier cru vineyards, located on the midslope of the Côte d'Or escarpment. The terroir here is perfectly suited to the production of Pinot Noir, to which it is exclusively planted. Clos des Chenes Premier Cru wines are some of Volnay's best. Situated just to the south of Volnay village itself, next to the commune boundary with Monthélie, Clos des Chenes is named after the oak trees (chenes) that line its western edge. Clos des Chênes has a sunnier, more southerly Volnay aspect that boosts ripeness and richness, while cool breezes and nights preserve acidity for balance. Its limestone marl and clay soils drain well, push roots deep, limit water and yields, and produce concentrated, mineral-driven grapes. Other leading climats are, Taillepieds, Champans, and Caillerets highlight the appellation’s range, from structured and age-worthy to refined and mineral expressions.
Vineyard: The soil is extremely thin, chalky, high in calcium and yield the lightest most delicate wines. The strip below, where most of the Premiers Crus are located, is much lower in chalk with a thin iron rich layer covering a strong subsoil.
Vinification: The grapes bear small little dark red berries. The bunches are destemmed; they macerate in open vats during 4 weeks helping the subtle terroir to reveal itself. After devatting, the wines are aged in oak barrels during 18 months.
Weather in 2015: A slow start gave way to a hot, dry growing season with rapid flowering and an early harvest. Despite some drought stress and low red yields, grapes were well balanced—especially whites with striking acidity—making 2015 a great vintage for both reds and whites.
Technical Information:
Region: Côte de Beaune, Volnay
Vineyard:
Clos des Chenes
Grape Varities: 100% Pinot Noir
Tasting Note: Bright medium red. Reticent nose offers scents of medicinal dark cherry and dark chocolate, plus a suggestion of sweet oak. Dark fruit flavors are accompanied by exotic liqueur and chocolate notes. A rather serious style of Volnay, less red fruity and floral in character than most of the foregoing samples if a touch rustic in the early going. Already boasts very good palate presence but this will not be an early drinker.- Tasted by Stephen Tanzer
