E. Guigal Cote Rotie La Turque 2018
-
Guigal is the most famous produer in Côte Rôtie and one of the finest in the Rhône Valley. It was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, following his departure from Vidal-Fleury, where he had worked for just under twenty years. His son, Marcel, joined the company in 1961 and is now the head of the company. Guigal pioneered the notion of single vineyard Côte Rôties and his 3 most famous wines, La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque are amongst the most sought after wines in the world today. Marcel Guigal's attitude to winemaking is typical of the simple genius that one seems to stumble upon when looking at any of the world's greatest winemakers - low yields, organic viticulture and little or no intervention in the cellars - in short, a respect for nature and a passion for the wine itself.
Côte-Rôtie "La Turque" is one of the flagship of the Domaine GUIGAL. A powerful wine with spicy notes, its terroirs from côte brune with “blond accents” lends it a great elegance.
Winemaking: Thermoregulated stainless steel tanks. Automated punching down. Alcoholic fermentation / 4 weeks maceration.
Soil Type: Silicone limestone with schistes producing clay soil rich in iron oxide.
Weather: 2018 in the northern Rhône is a vintage of scale and power for many of the reds, the result of the high and prolonged summer heat, but in the leading reds there is more clarity of fruit, and a silky quality to the tannins that wasn’t there in 2017. It's a vintage where the hierarchy of the soils has never been stronger. There are striking wines from the most noble terroirs, which have often prevailed in the battle with the weather. There has now been a run of four hot years in the last five, with 2016 the only exception.
Technical Information:
Grape: 93 % Syrah & 7% Viogner
Average age of vines: 25 Years
Ageing: 3.5 Years in New Oak
Alcohol: 14%
Tasting Note: Dark violet. Deeply perfumed black and blue fruit aromas, along with suggestions of Moroccan spices, potpourri, olive and smoky minerals. Densely packed cassis, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors show excellent definition and are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. The mineral and floral notes repeat on a wonderfully long and subtly chewy finish that's shaped by dusty, steadily building tannins. - Tasted by Josh Raynolds
