- Larry Cherubino Current & Past Cellar Masters
Larry Cherubino is a dynamo in the esteemed Western Australian wine industry, but considers himself a farmer more than anything else. He was raised in the Swan Valley in a family of dairy farmers and whilst this didn’t hold any real attraction, a life on the land was almost inevitable. Nearing the end of studies, he timidly admits, his mum got him some part time work at Houghton as a cellar hand. A degree in agriculture was augmented with another major in viticulture before more studies at Roseworthy in Adelaide. After very successful roles in small and large producers locally and abroad, Larry set up his own and the first release of own label Frankland River wine was in 2005. Larry continues to display his versatility and experience in a number of wine ranges all with careful attention to clonal selection and site suitability. The ranges show care and insight but are very different views of the same product. Stalwart Margaret River varieties compare with experimental varieties with natural wine making and international varieties in some exceptional sites from Porongarup in the east to Pemberton. And when he’s worked twenty four hours each day on his own wine, he consults for other big names in the Western Australian wine scene. He’s an energetic winemaker of some standing and is now producing some of Australia’s best.
Vineyards: A selection of the best rows from the Pemberton Channybearup Vineyard "Back Hill" block using the gingin clone.
Wine-making: The fruit was hand harvested and whole bunch pressed directly to oak. Natural yeasts were used, in new and used French oak barrels. The wine was rested on lees with minimal preservatives added 8 months prior to bottling.
Weather: The 2024 growing season was marked by favourable conditions that supported strong vine growth and fruit development. Spring provided a solid foundation with moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C and consistent, though slightly below-average, rainfall. This period of milder weather allowed for robust growth and a healthy flowering, essential for the quality of the fruit set. The moderate rainfall during spring, averaging between 70-110 mm per month, ensured that the soil retained enough moisture, allowing a balanced growth environment for the vines and reducing early season irrigation needs.
Technical Information:
Grape: 100% Chardonnay
Country of Origin: Australia
Region: Pemberton Western Australia
Vineyard: Channybearup
Year Planted: 1999
Alcohol: 13 %
pH: 3.13
Total Acidity: 7.59 g/L
Residual Sugar: 1 g/L
Bottled: February 2025
Winemaker: Larry Cherubino
Closure: Screwcap
Tasting Note: The 2024 Pemberton Chardonnay is rich, toasty and nutty on the nose, with notes of brûlée top, flambéed peach, cashews, lemon oil and white peach. The acidity on the palate is scintillating and serves to sensationally balance the opulence of the fruit. This is easily the best Pemberton Chardonnay I have seen from Cherubino, something I would not have predicted given some of the challenges of the hot, dry season. There's not a skerrick of that to be seen here. This is utterly superb! - Tasted by Erin Larkin

“The 2024 Chardonnay Pemberton shows its impressive class immediately with a brooding core of pineapple, crab apple and pithy citrus wrapped in a cloak of nutty barrel ferment and spicy oak. The palate offers excellent flavor density and composure, still youthful and closed, with prominent flinty elements, while the underlying power and length are undeniable. It just needs time.”

“Expressive, flashy aromas of lemon peel, salted nuts, oyster shells, grapefruit, pastry and flint. The tightly wound palate is balanced with a textural, rounded, midweight mouthfeel that leads into a mouthwatering finish. There's a great reductive edge here with underlying power and real mineral tension. 100% Gingin clone. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
