Description & Technical Information

The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

With its origins dating back to 1203, this vineyard produces a bold Grand Cru with spicy cherry characters and firm but elegant tannins. Clos St Denis is a 5.99 ha Grand Cru site to the North of the village of Morey St Denis. The Grand Crus are on the same hard limestone found in Gevrey- Chambertin. Clos St Dennis which is more toward the base of the hillside has soils rich in brown limestone and benefits from a particularly sheltered microclimate. Morey-Saint-Denis forms one of the smallest village appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Five Grand Crus are to be found there including the Clos Saint Denis. Wedged between Gevrey Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny.

Weather in 2015: A cold, damp end to winter hardly hastened budbreak, which took place towards the end of March/beginning of April. The second half of April and all of May were warm and dry, and growth accelerated as a result. The soil held plenty of water reserves thanks to the rainy winter. In certain areas, particularly those that had suffered hail damage in recent years, it was already apparent that yields were going to be low. June was very hot and the growth cycle accelerated further. The grapes began to ripen and the ideal climatic conditions persisted right up to the end of the growing season: the speed of ripening varied hugely depending on yield and the availability of water in each parcel. The warm wind that swept through the vineyards towards the end of August may well have concentrated the levels of acidity in the grapes. 2015 is was a great vintage for both reds and whites.

Technical Information:
Vineyards: Clos St Denis
Grape Varities: 100% Pinor Noir
Drink: Now to 2050

Tasting Note: Impressive dark berry, sous-bois, incense and iris-scented bouquet that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance and structure. There are layers of dark berry fruit here laced with chalk and a dash of black pepper, but what really elevates this is the precision and focus on the finish - one of the best amongst Louis Jadot's wines. This is an outstanding Clos Saint-Denis that will give 20-30 years of pleasure. - Tasted by Neal Martin

“The 2015 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru, which lies adjacent to Philippe Charlopin's (in fact, both were bought at the same time), has a very impressive dark berry, sous-bois, incense and iris-scented bouquet that is beautifully defined. There are layers of dark berry fruit here laced with chalk and a dash of black pepper, but what really elevates this is the precision and focus on the finish - one of the best amongst Louis Jadot's wines. “Tank sample. Lively bitter cherry fruit on the nose. Very sweet start and bracing fruit with tannins that are a bit sandy at this stage. Not opulent, but correct and certainly not overdone. The refreshing aspect of a burgundy grand cru!”

“Bright medium red. Vibrant aromas of raspberry, red licorice and pungent pepper are lifted by an exhilarating topnote. A very tightly wound, classic young Clos Saint-Denis that's slow to revealits weight and texture. But the very intense, penetrating flavors of raspberry, dried rose, spices and herbs convey a strong impression of class even if there's nothing easy about this reserved wine in the early going. Firmly tannic, savory and built for a graceful evolution in bottle, this seriously structured wine should gain in dimension and pliancy over the next 15 to 20 years.”

“**Note: from 90+ year old vines that are worked by horse**
Here the generous wood treatment is borderline intrusive as the menthol element all but dominates the markedly spicy and ripe dark berry fruit aromas. The medium-bodied flavors are even richer than those of the Clos de la Roche and more refined as well though, as one might reasonably expect, less powerful before culminating in a highly seductive and strikingly complex finale. This beauty isn't quite as structured but it should have no difficulty rewarding from 15 to 20 years of bottle age.”
