Description & Technical Information
-
The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Vineyard: The Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru appellation is shared by the two villages Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses in the Northern part of the Côte de Beaune. The village of Aloxe-Corton has the rare ability of having over half of its area covered by Grand Cru vineyards. This vineyard is one of the oldest owned by Louis Jadot since the XIXth century. It is located in the very heart of the appellation (next to the Corton Pougets) which then expanded after 1966. Originally, it was the only place to be allowed to bear the Corton-Charlemagne apellation. The exposure ranges from east to south and southwest.

Vinification: Grapes are harvested by hand and put in small cases in order not to damage the fruits. Grapes are pressed softly, they ferment in oak barrels produced by our cooperage. 1/3 are new barrels. Ageing usually lasts 15 months on fine lies before bottling.

Weather in 2016: After a complicated start to the growing season, a dry summer with some much needed rainfall in September meant grapes were harvested at a good level of ripeness from 27 September.

Tasting Note: Aromas of yellow orchard fruit, waxy lemon rind, iodine and smoky new oak introduce the 2016 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a full-bodied, satiny and nicely layered wine that's deep, concentrated and persistent. It's a youthfully reserved but decidedly impressive Corton-Charlemagne that will reward bottle age.- Tasted by William Kelley

“Cask sample. Tantalising aroma – so young but you can sense the potential. Deep, pure citrus, barely inflected by the creamy oak but given breadth and texture by it. Deep with richness that borders on just-ripe pear even though the lemon purity drives to the finish. It may well age longer but these days I am more cautious with white burgundy. (JH)”

“Charlemagne Grand Cru
(Jadot bottled 35 barrels, representing a normal yield; the harvest lasted into the beginning of October): Very pale, bright yellow. Knockout nose combines lemon, ginger, botanical herbs, shiso leaf and crushed-rock minerality. Seriously concentrated wine, showing the juicy side of the 2016 vintage and the impeccable balance that was possible when yields were normal. The sharply delineated citrus, spice and mineral flavors are framed and intensified by harmonious acidity ("which was easy to control because we had so many barrels," according to Barnier). Conveys an impression of outstanding density without weight and finishes with great palate-staining length, herbal lift and salty grip.”
