Louis Jadot Domaine Gagey Beaune Aux Cras 1er Cru 2016

-
The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Location: Beaune vineyards are the most extensive of the Côte de Beaune, between Savigny to the North, and Pommard to the South. There are no Grands Crus vineyards in this commune, but there are 36 Premiers Crus. This Premier Cru is located at the heart of the Beaune appellation, above the Beaune Theurons vineyards, also another great site for Louis Jadot.

Vineyard: The Aux Cras vineyard is very well located. It is South-East oriented at an altitude of 260 m on a rather steep slope. The soil is not very deep, it is very stony. explaining its name: Cras = formerly a quarry.

Vinification & Maturation: Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by our cooperage Cadus during 18 months.

Weather: The 2016 vintage experienced a mild winter, followed by a cooler than average March, and a tempestuous spring. April saw severe frosts, particularly in high altitude vineyards, and a severe outbreak of mildew, leading to heavy spraying and risk to accreditation. The wet weather continued until June, with dry, sunny weather in August. Producers performed two harvests, one for grapes that survived the frosts and another for vines that had produced a second crop. The second harvest was not necessary, but some producers found it useful to bolster the initial crop. The harvest was small, but the grapes that survived were generally of high quality. Burgundy 2016 is considered a classic vintage, renowned for its balance and poise.

Technical Information:

Tasting Note: The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Aux Cras has a fragrant and floral bouquet with rose petal and peony scents infusing the red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy mouthfeel, softer than the other premier cru Beaune this vintage with an appealing, sorbet-fresh finish. - Tasted by Neal Martin

92/100
William Kelley
“The Beaune Cras is superb this year, opening in the glass with a lovely bouquet of red and black cherry, dark chocolate and roast game, elegantly framed by new oak. On the palate the wine shows superb focus, structured around fine-grained tannins and a bright line of succulent acidity. Its finish is long and flavourful.”

Stephen Tanzer
“Medium red. Aromas of musky redcurrant, cherry and coffee, plus an element of spicy oak. Medicinal cherry and spice flavors show good energy but modest flesh. Some oak tannins may be accentuating the skin tannins here. Frédéric Barnier noted that vineyards on the north side of Beaune were generally more frosted (Jadot made only tiny quantities of Cent-Vignes and Toussaints), but that there was also no Aigrots in 2016.”

“The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Aux Cras has a fragrant and floral bouquet with rose petal and peony scents infusing the red cherry and strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy mouthfeel, softer than the other premier cru Beaunes this vintage with an appealing, sorbet-fresh finish. Enjoy this Beaune premier cru in its youth after a couple of years.”
