Location: Gevrey-Chambertin is the most northern of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits, widely regarded as one of the greatest terroirs for Pinot Noir in the world, thanks to its
calcareous clay soils excellent drainage and broad east-facing slope that delivers power and longevity. Totalling a little over 400 hectares, with 26 Premiers Crus and 80 hectares of vineyard across 9 Grand Cru.
Vineyard: Combe aux Moines is widely regarded as Gevrey-Chambertin’s finest Premier Cru, situated high on the slope just below the forest at around 300–340 metres altitude with an east to south-east exposure. Its thin, well-drained limestone soils and elevated, cooler position produce wines of precision, mineral tension, and structure, with notable freshness and aging potential that often places it close in quality to Grand Cru sites. The vineyard is situated at the north of Combe de Lavaux, next to Premier Cru Cazetiers.
Vinification & Maturation: Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by the CADUS cooperage during 18 months.
Weather: The 2018 season began with a mild, rainy winter that refilled water reserves, followed by a cool, wet March and budbreak in early April. Strong sunshine dominated from April to September, driving fast early growth and smooth flowering in late May/early June. Summer was hot and often very dry, with only minor storms and little disease or hail damage. Véraison started in early July but lasted unusually long due to heat and limited water, leading to slow ripening with thick-skinned, healthy grapes and generous yields. Harvest began at the end of August, ramped up from 4 September (especially for Chardonnay), required minimal sorting, and was completed in about two weeks.

Tasting Note: Brooding and slightly closed on the nose, starting to unfurl with a little time in the glass. Dark fruits, Sichuan pepper and cinnamon. The palate is more revealing but still structured, with exotic spices, black cherry and pithy, layered tannins. Bright acidity keeps everything in check and adds a moreish quality to the finish. Fantastic depth. - Tasted by Tom Parker MW
