Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles St Jacques 1er Cru 2019

-
The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Location: Gevrey Chambertin is the northernmost of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits. There are 26 Premiers Crus and 8 Grands Crus. Half of the Premiers Crus of Gevrey lie scattered around the perimeter of the Grands Crus; the other half occupy a steep, southeast facing slope to the north, with calcareous clay soils.

Vineyard: The Estournelles Saint Jacques vineyard is situated on that Southeast facing slope, at the begining of the Combe Lavaux, on top of Lavaux St Jacques and near Clos St Jacques. There are similarities in the soil composition between those premiers crus and the grands crus.

Vinification & Maturation: Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by our cooperage Cadus during 18 months.

Weather in 2019: The vintage was characterised by greater than average sunlight. The harvest was relatively late by modern standards, beginning in September rather than August. In the Côte de Nuits, a number of growers waited until mid to late September to start picking; they felt that the unusual weather conditions had blocked phenolic ripeness and the grapes needed a little more time – and possibly some rain. In the end, relatively little water arrived, but there doesn’t seem to be excessive alcohol or richness in later-picked wines. The resulting berries were concentrated, with a high ratio of skins to juice, high acidity and higher than usual sugar levels – though without hitting the extremes occasionally encountered in ’18. The red wines are excellent, with slightly riper tannins than in ’18. Despite relatively elevated alcohol levels which generally sit half a degree either side of 14%, the low pH – and therefore high acidity – has ensured they retain plenty of freshness and classically Burgundian features. The wines were very approachable from barrel, but their tremendous balance and concentrated fruit should ensure they offer medium- to long-term ageing potential.

Tasting Note: Opening in the glass with scents of cherries, cassis and blackberries complemented by hints of forest floor and raw cocoa, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques is medium-bodied, bright and fine-boned, underpinned by lively acids and displaying a delicate, elegant profile. This is shaping up very nicely. - Tasted by William Kelley

“The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has an arresting and very vanilla-y bouquet that is showing too much new oak at the moment. This is very high-toned, with orange blossom and bunches of violets rendering it Vosne-like in style. The palate is by far the sweetest and feels ostentatious in style, at the expense of terroir expression when juxtaposed against the Lavaux Saint-Jacques. Long and candied on the finish. I hope this will become more toned down with bottle age. ”

“Cask sample. Deep garnet. Intense ferny undergrowth on the nose and pretty exciting vivacity on the palate. More concentrated than most. Closer perhaps to the traditional view of red burgundy. There is so much fruit that you could, with murder in mind, drink this even sooner.”
