Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles St Jacques 1er Cru 2020

The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Location: Gevrey Chambertin is the northernmost of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits. There are 26 Premiers Crus and 8 Grands Crus. Half of the Premiers Crus of Gevrey lie scattered around the perimeter of the Grands Crus; the other half occupy a steep, southeast facing slope to the north, with calcareous clay soils.

Vineyard: The Estournelles Saint Jacques vineyard is situated on that Southeast facing slope, at the beginning of the Combe Lavaux, on top of Lavaux St Jacques and stretches west from the outside wall of Clos St Jacques. There are similarities in the soil composition between those premiers crus and the grands crus.

Vinification & Maturation: Destemmed grapes ferment in vats during 3 to 4 weeks. Aging takes place in oak barrels produced by our cooperage Cadus during 18 months.

Weather in 2020: Winter 2019-20 was mild and dry, especially in February. However, rainfall in late 2019 helped replenish soil water reserves. Mild weather continued into March, with early vegetative growth observed. Cooler early April slowed growth, but temperatures rose again later that month, aiding the plants in synthesizing high levels of organic acids. May brought rain, supporting vine growth and full flowering occurred by late May and early June, despite dry conditions. By the mid-flowering stage, growth was about three weeks ahead of the previous year. Summer began with veraison in July, followed by several heatwaves. By the end of July, ripening accelerated, especially for Pinot Noir. Harvesting began on 19 August, with the red yields similar to 2019 and whites slightly higher.

Tasting Note: The expansive nose of fresh black cherry and dry earth leads you into this very compact and concentrated Gevrey-Chambertin, which has the scale and gravitas of a Grand Cru, as well as massive tannin structure. This youthful form might be too much for some, but if you have a little patience, this is going to be a magnificent drinking experience. From organically grown grapes.
