Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatieres 1er Cru 2012

-
The House of Louis Jadot has been producing exceptional Burgundy wines since its founding in 1859 by Louis Henry Denis Jadot. For the past 150 years Louis Jadot has continued as one of the great names of Burgundy and has gained international reputation for its superb red and white Burgundy wines. Louis Jadot is not only one of the largest producers of estate Burgundies of the Cote d'Or, it is one of the most celebrated exporters of premium Burgundies, owning close to 140 acres of vineyards from 24 of the most prestigious sites in Burgundy.

Location: Puligny-Montrachet, situated to the south of Meursault and to the north of Chassagne Montrachet, shares with Chassagne a handful of the greatest white wine vineyards in the world. The Premier Cru vineyards of Puligny Montrachet, noted for the exceptionally high and consistent quality of the wines they produce, stretch across the upper half of Puligny's slope from Meursault to Chassagne.

Vineyard: The Folatières climate lies near the summit of this slope, above Clos de la Garenne roughly midway between Meursault and Montrachet. The clay and chalk soil, which is very stony, drains well and warms through easily. This wine is vinified and then aged in wooden barrels for 12-15 months before bottling.

Vinification and Maturation: Grapes are harvested by hand and put in small cases in order not to damage the fruits. Grapes are pressed softly, they ferment in oak barrels produced by our cooperage. 1/3 are new barrels. Aging usually lasts 15 months on fine lies before bottling.

Weather: 2012 vintage was born of a troubled growing season characterised by constrasting and unusual weather patterns. Winegrowers always have to keep a close eye on their vines, poised to treat when necessary. In 2012 they had to be guardian angels, ready at every moment to fight the fungal diseases, to defeat them and save the crop. Mother nature also stepped in to save the grapes from rot and the grapes that came into the wineries were of astonishing quality. Although the half of the crop was destroyed by hail, the quality was good and the red wines were a great success.

Technical Information:
Region: Burgundy
Sub Region: Puligny-Montrachet
Vineyard: Folatières
Grape Varities: 100% Chardonnay
Drink: Now to 2030

Tasting Note: The 2012 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres comes from vines on the upper reaches of the climat, just 50-meters from Chevalier-Montrachet. It has a very refined bouquet with subtle mineral scents, smoke and some pressed flowers. The palate is well-balanced with a fine line of acidity that neatly counterbalances the rounded, rich, lightly honeyed fruit, leaving the finish voluminous and satisfying. Excellent. - Tasting note from Robertparker.com

“Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatières from Louis Jadot has a vibrant and energetic bouquet with just a touch of reduction, though it blows off to reveal a compelling bouquet with lovely mineral, granitic scents. The palate is crisp and fresh, well balanced with impressive power and intensity without compromising the tension and race. There is clearly fine length here. This is a Puligny-Montrachet with grand ambition. Yes, it's still a little oaky and more modern in style, but I have faith.”

“Very lifted, 'spiny' nose. Excellent palate weight without any heaviness. Sweetness and acidity seem well married. Such a charmer with some herbal notes. Really lovely wine with great energy. Long and neat. ”

“(from 35-to-40-year-old vines in the lower part of the cru): Bright yellow. Slightly high-toned aromas of white peach, acacia flower and nutty oak. Juicy and savory in the mouth, more about soil than primary fruits. This dense, dry premier cru shows serious saline minerality and a chewy texture. Began a bit tannic but smoothed out nicely with some aeration.”
