Louis Roederer Camille Charmont Pinot Noir 2018

Per Bottle
Description & Technical Information
As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House is currently managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. Today, Champagne Louis Roederer own an astounding 240 hectares of vineyards in the very best locations that cover two-thirds of their grape requirements and are pioneers in biodynamic farming, having converted a total of 78-hectares to accommodate production using biodynamic methods. Their portfolio begins with Brut Premier, one of Champagne's most seductive non-vintage cuvées and ends with Cristal, perhaps the world's most recognised prestige cuvée champagne.

Champagne is 300 kilometres north of Burgundy where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive producing richly flavoured still red and white wines. Those few hundred km’s make quite a difference and sparkling wine is best suited to the cooler Champagne region. A few have made still wines in Champagne called Coteaux Champenois or Champagne Hillsides, typically in the warmer years when the grapes get a little more ripe. Louis Roederer set out on their mission more than 15 years ago by identifying specific plots and altering pruning and training to give wines of the vitality and finesse in a single-varietal and single-vineyard wine with an identity of its own.

Paying tribute to the great grandmother of the family, Camille Orly-Roederer, Frederic Rouzaud decided to dedicate this collection of single- vineyard still wines to her in admiration of her bold character, bright personality and exceptional tenacity whilst keeping in touch with their core values… Innovation, vision and progress; therefore calling the latest collection – “Hommage à Camille.”

Weather: 2018 was a very unusual year in more ways than one. After an exceptionally rainy winter, spring was very mild. The warmth brought with it stormy and sometimes destructive weather as well as variable rainfall throughout the appellation. Summer was very warm, dry and sunny and surpassed even the record breaking temperatures of 2003. 2018 is therefore a new benchmark for the Champagne region in terms of the heat, drought and sunshine levels.

Technical Information:
Grape: 100% Pinot Noir from a 0.43 acre plot Charmont lieu-dit in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ
Production: 1,631 bottles

Tasting Note: Deep ruby red hue. Delicate, pure aromas of raspberry, black fruit, flower petals and spice. The nose reveals the characteristic finesse of Pinot Noir, becoming more and more fragrant as it opens up. After a few minutes, subtle notes of cocoa and smoke from oak ageing emerge from the glass and add complexity to the ensemble. The palate is charming, seductive and velvety smooth. This wine is defined by its remarkable balance and fusion of flavours which linger on the pure, fresh, saline finish, underpinned by the characteristic acidity of a fine Champagne.

Antonio Galloni
“The 2018 Camille Hommage Mareuil-sur-Aÿ is fabulous. It emerges from six parcels, all on eroded clay soils in Chaumont, which is on the border between Mareuil and Aÿ. Ripe red berry fruit, rose petal, lavender and spice race across the palate in a silky, sumptuous Coteaux Champenois that dazzles. The 2018 saw 12 months of aging, 80% in oak of various sizes (40% new) and 20% in terracotta. The 30-40% stems are barely evident. More importantly, the 2018 represents a major step forward from the first vintages.”

““The youthful, already expressively fragrant nose captures the pretty, perfumy nuances of Pinot Noir. There is rare delicacy to the nose, which is very much on the red fruit side with sweet rose petal notes adding to the charm. The oakiness is light and seamlessly integrated to the ethereal fruitiness. The driven yet silky palate comes with rare vivacity and tension. A gentle bite of fine-grained tannin brings grip to the chalky mineral finish. Highly primary still with a promise of more aromatic complexity.””
James Suckling
““A beautiful red with strawberry, smoke and light chocolate character. Real red. Medium body, firm tannins and a creamy finish. Shows plenty of subtle character at the end. New still wine from Champagne Louis Roederer. Drink now.””

““From a 0.43ha lieu dit (Charmont) in Mareuil in the balmy vintage of 2018, another very limited edition (only 1,631 bottles this time), aged for 14 months in French oak, none of it new. Ruby red, with inviting aromas of crushed raspberry and Morello cherry, a toasty backdrop... The palate is silky, moreish, with a basket of red fruit set out for our appreciation and a lick of pepper at the back. The oak is well integrated and the acidity, whilst high, does not overwhelm. Charming.””
William Kelley
““The 2018 Coteaux Champenois Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Hommage à Camille derives from a 0.43-hectare parcel in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ lieu-dit Charmont that was planted with Burgundian Pinot Noir selections in 2002 and farmed with the intention of producing a still wine. Offering up aromas of raspberries and wild strawberry preserves mingled with hints of petals and sweet spices, it's medium-bodied, elegantly fleshy and precise, with a bright spine of acid, delicately chalky tannins and a penetrating, perfumed finish. Fine-boned and elegant, with the expressive fruit typical of the vintage, it's a promising debut for Roederer.””
