Description & Technical Information

As the largest independent family-managed Champagne producer, Louis Roederer rank amongst the region's absolute finest. Established in 1776, the House is currently managed by seventh generation family member Frédéric Rouzaud alongside long-time Chef de Cave and Champagne legend Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. Today, Champagne Louis Roederer own an astounding 240 hectares of vineyards in the very best locations that cover two-thirds of their grape requirements and are pioneers in biodynamic farming, having converted a total of 78-hectares to accommodate production using biodynamic methods. Their portfolio begins with Brut Premier, one of Champagne's most seductive non-vintage cuvées and ends with Cristal, perhaps the world's most recognised prestige cuvée champagne.

Champagne is 300 kilometres north of Burgundy where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive producing richly flavoured still red and white wines. Those few hundred km’s make quite a difference and sparkling wine is best suited to the cooler Champagne region. A few have made still wines in Champagne called Coteaux Champenois or Champagne Hillsides, typically in the warmer years when the grapes get a little more ripe. Louis Roederer set out on their mission more than 15 years ago by identifying specific plots and altering pruning and training to give wines of the vitality and finesse in a single-varietal and single-vineyard wine with an identity of its own.

Paying tribute to the great grandmother of the family, Camille Orly-Roederer, Frederic Rouzaud decided to dedicate this collection of single- vineyard still wines to her in admiration of her bold character, bright personality and exceptional tenacity whilst keeping in touch with their core values… Innovation, vision and progress; therefore calling the latest collection – “Hommage à Camille.”

Weather: 2018 was a very unusual year in more ways than one. After an exceptionally rainy winter, spring was very mild. The warmth brought with it stormy and sometimes destructive weather as well as variable rainfall throughout the appellation. Summer was very warm, dry and sunny and surpassed even the record breaking temperatures of 2003. 2018 is therefore a new benchmark for the Champagne region in terms of the heat, drought and sunshine levels.

Technical Information:
Grape: 100% Chardonnay from “historic” 55 yo vines in the 0.55 acre plot lieu-dit in Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger
Production: 2,880 bottles

Tasting Note: “The reserved nose gives an instant chalky whiff. The cool and crunchy Chardonnay fruitiness is mild coming with an elegant floral twist backed up by refined oaky tones. There is roundness to the texture but the breezy salinity is distinctively Champenois. A subtle and delicate whole.” Tasting note by Essi Avellan MW

““Sliced apple, pear, flint and stone on the nose. Full-bodied with a delicious, tangy palate with hints of tarragon and white peach. Minerally finish. Subtle and complete. Serious white. Drink now.””

“The 2018 Camille Hommage Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is sourced from Volibarts, a well-exposed parcel in Mesnil that informed the 1961, the last Coteaux Champenois made at Roederer. It was aged in a combination of 60% amphora, 20% new oak and 20% steel. Lemon confit, almond, dried flowers and tropical accents fill out the layers effortlessly. It will drink well right out of the gate.”

““The complexity of upbringing (a 15-month ageing in a combination of sandstone vats, stainless steel and oak barrels) is repaid by the challenges of a full appreciation. The first impression is of lime, verbena, chalk and spring flowers; intimation of Giacometti lean rather than Rubens fleshy. The palate challenges this presumption and impresses with its texture, mealy honeyed notes sitting well with orchard fruit freshness, spice from the oak equally satisfying, the finish firm and measured, with hints of salinity sounding the final fanfare.””

““From a 0.55-hectare parcel in lieu-dit Volibarts, Roederer's 2018 Coteaux Champenois Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Hommage à Camille unwinds in the glass with an understated bouquet of white flowers, linden blossom, citrus zest, blanched almonds and rock salt. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's seamless and complete, with bright girdling acids and an intensely chalky finish. Lecaillon believes this will be long-lived wine, developing additional facets with age; and having followed an open bottle over several days, I'm inclined to agree with him.””
