Marchesi Antinori Badia A Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2021
-
Badia a Passignano is located north of Sambuca Val di Pesa, 3 km south of Tenuta Tignanello; stretching over 223 hectares, with 65 ha planted with Sangiovese grapes on a limestone & clay soil at altitudes of 250 to 300 meters in one of the most beautiful areas of Chianti Classico. The area has been renowned for its wine production since the 10th century, still today the wines are aged in the historic cellars under the Badia (abbey) of Passignano.
Vinification: After the destemming, the grapes were carefully selected and then softly pressed. The alcoholic fermentation hastened in about 10 days, following which the must has remained in maceration with its own skins for a further 10-12 days. After racking, and once the malolactic fermentation was completed, the wine began its aging period in French and Hungarian oak woods for a few months. Badia a Passignano was bottled in a tightness and then rested in a bottle before its release on the market.
Weather The 1000th 2021 in Chianti Classico will be remembered for the long and patient season: a vintage capable of giving power and grace. Winter was not too cold and characterized by rains until the end of March. The start of spring has favored an early budding of the vines that have subsequently slowed down their vegetative cycle due to the generally cool and dry climate of April. May and June were regular, not too hot, with some rains that did not affect the excellent flowering and agage for Sangiovese. The summer was basically hot and dry, especially in August, a month characterized in the final by some rainfall that allowed the plants to start the process of maturation. September and October were ideal: sunny, not too hot, ventilated and characterized by cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly. Overall, 2021 is one of the best vintages ever. The collection operations for Badia a Passignano began in the latter part of September and ended around mid-October.
