Opus One 2013
Bottles Available:
17 × 75cl from 13th Oct We keep some stock in our London Warehouse. Large volumes take 24 hours from our out of London warehouse.
The story of Opus One began with an unprecedented collaboration between two giants of the wine world. Baron Philippe de Rothschild brought the legacy of Bordeaux’s Pauillac, while Robert Mondavi contributed his trailblazing vision for Californian fine wine. Together, they established the estate in Napa Valley’s Oakville sub-region, with the first vintage released in 1979.
Opus One farms four estate-owned vineyards in Oakville, including prized parcels within the legendary To Kalon vineyard. These diverse terroirs provide the foundation for the estate’s signature complexity and refinement.
Opus One follows a meticulous approach rooted in Bordeaux tradition but adapted to Napa’s unique climate. The flagship wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon–dominant Bordeaux blend aged for around 18 months in new French oak barrels. This careful process produces wines with structure, finesse and remarkable ageing potential.
The estate produces two wines: Opus One – a vintage Bordeaux blend defined by elegance, concentration and longevity. Overture – a non-vintage Bordeaux blend, created from multiple vintages to deliver immediate approachability and supple charm.
Weather: A very dry and unseasonably warm winter gave the vines an early start on the 2013 vintage. Flowering occurred under near-perfect conditions, which led to excellent fruit set throughout the Oakville estate vineyards and ensured a bountiful harvest though smaller than the previous year. Ideal conditions continued during the summer with moderate temperatures prevailing until harvest began after midnight on September 5th. Despite sporadic stops due to weather events, the relatively compressed harvest was completed on October 8th.
Technical Information:
Grape: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot & 2% Malbec.
Region: Napa Valley, California
Sub Region: Oakville
Skin Contact: 18 Days
Barrel Ageing: 17½ months in new French oak
Alcohol: 14.5 %
Tasting Note: The Opus One 2013 offers splendid aromas of blueberry, cassis, and blackberries with highlights of rose, anise and baking spices. A creamy entry gives way to layers of complexity which unfold in the mid-palate with velvety tannins enrobing a center of concentrated black fruit with juicy freshness. Elegantly balanced, the acidity and core structure deliver a persistent finish with hints of dark chocolate. The Opus One 2013 promises enjoyment for decades to come.

100/100
“The greatest Opus ever. Terrific aromas of crushed black currants, blueberries and flowers with hints of sweet tobacco. Roses continue to exude opulence and class. Full body, superb balance of ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Complex aftertaste of black fruits and citrus fruit. Extremely persistent. So approachable now and enjoyable. But will be even better in 2019 and beyond. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc, 6% merlot, 6% petit verdot, 2% malbec. This will always be beautiful to drink.”
97+/100
“The 2013 Opus One, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, is a beauty. Velvety textured, without a had edge to be found, notes of crème de cassis, blueberry, subtle wood and floral notes gently rise from the wine’s dense purple color. Beautifully full-bodied and extraordinarily elegant and pure, this is certainly one of their great achievements over the last 37 years. The wine has an exquisite finish and can be drunk now or cellared for 25-30 years.”
18.5/20
“79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 6% Merlot, 2% Malbec. The product of 18 months in barriques and the same period in bottle before release. Dark crimson. Extremely intense and even savoury on the nose - much less obviously Napa than the multi-vintage Overture tasted immediately beforehand. This has real verve but also wonderfully supple tannins. Heady with an edge of iodine, this is the taste of luxury. (It's not difficult to imagine how much discussion between winemaker Michael Silacci of Opus and Philippe Dhalluin of Mouton went into this.)”
