Zuccardi Fosil Chardonnay 2023
-
Sebastian Zuccardi, along with his grandfather, Alberto Zuccardi, planted the first Zuccardi vines in a small plot in Maipu in the Mendoza region in 1963. There has been no looking back for the family ever since. Today, the Zuccardi family is known for its young, intelligent and enterprising winemaking team at the helm of the winemaking affairs. This label is known to produce some of the highest quality of wines not only in the Uco Valley, but in the world as well. In 2008, Sebastian Zuccardi added a special Research and Development Wing in the family winery, to learn and analyse more about the terroirs. Different types of microclimates prevail in the farms or vineyards where grapes are produced for Zuccardi wines. Located in the Uco Valley, which is at the Andes Mountains' foothills in Mendoza, these vineyards enjoy the benefits of altitude, cool and dry climate throughout the year.
In the year 2020, over 500 international references, wine experts and lovers voted Zuccardi as the best winery and vineyard in South America and the world, for the 2nd consecutive year! Mendoza is the premium wine region in Argentina.
Vineyards: Fósil is a white mountain wine. It comes from vineyards cultivated in the Paraje Estancia within the IG San Pablo, at 1400 meters (4,593 ft) of elevation, and less than one kilometer (3,280 ft) away from the beginning of the Andes Mountains.
Vinification:Selection of clusters. Filling of the concrete vessels by gravity. Fermentation with native yeasts in concrete vessels. Aging in concrete vessels. Without malolactic fermentation.
Weather: The 2023 vintage was warm and very dry, which gave us excellent health and quality in the grapes. It is a year that is also characterized by lower yields, due to the frost in the spring of 2022. Knowing the particularities of each place in the vineyards allowed us to define the harvest time for each area very precisely, always in search of freshness, the expression of place and avoiding overripeness.
Technical Information:
Grape varieties: 100% Chardonnay
Origin: IG San Pablo, Tunuyán, Valle de Uco, Mendoza
Altitude: 1400 m | 4593 ft
TA: 7.21 g/l
pH: 3,15
Alcohol: 13 %
Closure: Cork
Tasting Note: Fósil has quickly established itself as a high-altitude white with a refreshing, non-ripe profile. Even in a warm vintage like 2023, the Chardonnay Fósil offers herbal and reductive notes, with hints of huacatay (a native Andean herb) alongside lime and lemon, all set against a soft backdrop of linden blossom. Lean and vibrant, the palate is pure and chalky in texture, flowing with a light, compact feel. The 2023 vintage solidifies its terroir-driven character. - Tasted by Joaquin Hidalgo
