Tasting Dom Perignon 2013 and 2012 side by side

Today we taste Dom Perignon 2013 and 2012 side by side down on the south coast. What a difference a year can make.

The 2012 weather has been hallmarked by many as very challenging but has created some stunning Champagne. Relatively low yields due to various weather conditions throughout the year. The winter months brought some frosts and hail which damaged the early stages of bud burst. August and September were very warm and this helped rescue and give the grapes a stunning maturity.
The 2013 winemaking year proved a welcome reconnection with the glorious past of late harvest vintages. After a cold, wet winter, spring was grey, quite cool and extremely rainy. The vines began budding about two weeks later than the average for the decade, a delay that lasted all the way until the harvest. The hot and dry summer was the sunniest on record in the Champagne region, proving particularly beneficial for the quality of the grapes. Rain in early September quickly ceded to easterly winds that kept the grapes healthy until they were picked. The harvest at Dom Pérignon ran from September 28th to October 15th. Tasting the fruit revealed a promising balance between acidic and full-bodied.

“Some vintages are vine growers’ vintages, but for the 2012, Dom Pérignon’s chef de cave wore the blender’s hat and had an amazing set of building blocks, especially on the Pinot Noir front: Aÿ, Verzenay, Bouzy and Hautvillers. Shiny lemon green colour. The abundantly toasty nose delivers instant ‘wow’ notes – so subtle yet at the same time full of character. Charred tones combine with sweet vanilla, coffee and cream notes. Since release, the toastiness has really built up, and finely so. At this stage, the fruitiness is left a little behind but is as pristine as ever, showing a perfectly ripe yet crunchy profile. The palate comes with soft charm and impressive intensity, managing to remain rather light and vibrant. This is smooth-textured and rich, with fascinatingly prickly bubbles that add tension to the wine. Dosage 5g/l”

“At first, the nose comes across soft and toasty, less on the gunpowder but more on the toasted bread side. A little shy perhaps, but the bouquet is impeccably pure and deliciously fruity once it reveals more of itself after a short while in the glass. There is ripe yellow plum fruit but also a brisk menthol breeze as well as some sweeter, even tropical aromas. All nuances are perfectly integrated and elegantly subtle for the time being, echoing a reservedness speaking of longevity. On the soft cushiony palate, the linearity and vivacity are first to be noted, but soon after one gets charmed by the creamy-caressing texture. The dosage is perfectly balanced at 5g/l. Much racier and perhaps a little more austere than most recent Dom Pérignon vintages, however, this coolly fruity, tight and focused wines has what true longevity takes. It has evolved slowly until now and will be one to defy time. ”
