The Louis Roederer Collection Journey 238 to 244
A fascinating insight into the beginnings of Collection, starting in spring 2014 when @jblfizz assembled the first trial blend of Collection 238 based on the 2013 vintage. At this time the “perpetual reserve” was only 2012 vintage wines, those with a core that are the most saline and fresh.
The first three Collection Champagnes were bottled as a trial, 1000 bottles each of Collection 238 to 240 allowing @jblfizz to track the origins of this new recipe. The big step and first commercial release was Collection 241 (magnums only) based on 2016 where the oak reserve wines are now at 10% and the perpetual reserve now is a blend of four vintages, 2012 to 2015.
Collection 242 was the first 75cl to be released, based on the 2017 harvest and considering this was an awful year for red grapes the champagne today looks incredible. The impact of more vintages in the perpetual reserve is now easy to see, now 2012 to 2016 and 10% oak reserve wines really add to the complexity.
With the next three Collection 242 to the not yet released 244 you see the fine tuning phase of this cuvee; more precision & harmony and that Roederer lightness on the palate.
An incredible journey, thank you Jean-Baptiste for sharing the beginning and future of Collection.
Each Collection champagne is based on a dominant year and the number of the collection represents the number of times Louis Roederer have made their Non-Vintage blend, the first year being made in 1776. The future looks very bright with Collection 244 coming out soon based on the 2019 vintage, demonstrating the class of both the vintage and the genius blending of @jblfizz

“Lots of chew and a dry finish. Still quite tannic but with lots tucked in there for future development.”
Leclerc Briant Blanc de Meuniers 2016
92 → 92/100

“This pure Meunier from Chamery gains gravitas from fermentation in oak. The brightly fruity, fragrant nose has beautiful yellow raspberry and blood orange tones, plus a light touch of toast. The oaky whiff is well married to the sweet fruitiness. On the palate, it is silky smooth and driven, ending on a super-dry but invigoratingly fresh mineral note.”
Leclerc Briant Grand Blanc Blanc de Blancs Brut Zero 2014
The wine is settled naturally and is not filtered and is suitable for vegans. The juice is fermented in small oak barrels and doesn’t receive dosage or sulphites. The wine is bottled with lower sugar than normal so the bottle fermentation produces a champagne at around 5 bars of pressure rather than the typical 6 bars. This gives a smaller bubble and gently mousse.
A year where it was necessary to select the red grapes carefully to maintain high quality. In general Chardonnay is the star of the vintage.

At Champagne Louis Roederer we received the usual in depth over view of the 2022 harvest @jblfizz tasting 25 plots representing 46 hectares of their estate, most from Grand Cru villages. In summary: no disease pressure and all about waiting for phenolic ripeness, Pinot Noir ripened more text book and was a waiting game with Chardonnay which was 11.5% potential alcohol when ready. With these hotter summers, the picking window is now shortened, often as short as 5 days. With all the research and development in Roederer’s vineyards @jblfizz says he is now less worried about maintaining freshness, his new challenge is about subtlety of flavour when you have very ripe grapes. With much of the Roederer estates vines growing on chalk subsoils , the fresh mineral and saline character is there in abundance, low pH’s are typically around 3.02 and the MLF was blocked on all the Roederer estate fruit, though malic acid levels were low. @jblfizz mentioned as it wasn’t as hot as 2019, the 2022 year wines are more impacted by the soils.
As usual we tasted blind the plots Pierre Vaudon in Avize, two neighbouring plots one farmed biodynamically since 2002 and one organically since 2012. The difference is always amazing and every year when we taste them blind I always prefer the wine from the biodynamically farmed plots because it demonstrates more “soil influence” and it has delicious fruit, yet a linear focus.
Pinor Noir is no doubt king in 2022, but that said there will be some excellent Chardonnay.
Thank you Jean-Baptiste for the most insightful tasting of 2022 vins clairs.
